Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania outperforms expectations with a strong first weekend at the box office

Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania did not generate the kind of buzz that most Marvel Studios films do prior to release. Jonathan Majors received positive feedback for his first big-screen role as Kang The Conqueror, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new bad guy, but critics weren’t impressed with the rest of the film. It’s only the second film in the franchise to receive a “Rotten” rating from Rotten Tomatoes, following Chloé Zhao’s Eternals.

However, audiences’ excitement about the start of the MCU’s Phase 5 proved to be more powerful than negative word of mouth: Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania became the first film in 2023 to have a $100 million opening weekend. Check out the Top 10 results from the last three days below, and then stick around for my analysis.

When looking at the entire box office history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Ant-Man films have never stood out as particularly popular. When the series first debuted in 2015, the first film only grossed $57.2 million in its opening weekend, which remains the lowest total earned since the Walt Disney Company acquired the franchise, and its sequel, Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man And The Wasp, only fared slightly better in 2018 with a $75.8 million debut.
